In early 2015, Brian and I made a decision to open up a new business on the Island. We wanted to create a nice, fun, and friendly place for our visitors and locals to shop for all kinds of products from t-shirts to local art.
Being a dog friendly place, and wanting to include our furry visitors in our idea, we created Island Dog Beach and Surf Shop. We worked hard over several months renovating the old Island Emporium building, updating the inside but keeping the same beautiful exterior turquoise color. We finally opened in February 2016.
A big addition to our family came in July of 2015, Roxi our beautiful and loving Newfoundland puppy who came all the way from Kentucky to be an island girl. Roxi grew up in our store over the next couple of years and welcomed all our visitors, human and canine. She loved her job and worked tirelessly every day. Roxi's belly rubs and pretty poses are legendary.
We enjoyed the store so much and we grew over time to add golf carts, paddle boards, and kayak rentals to our store.
In 2018, we had a nice couple stop by and ask if we would ever want to sell our business. They loved it and wanted to make it their own. We hadn't really thought about selling the store, but we realized that by splitting the business, we could expand the outdoor offerings to add even more fun items for our visitors.
We officially sold the Beach and Surf Shop in September 2018 and Island Dog Outdoors was born. Hurricane Michael delayed our official opening into 2019, but we were up and running by March. We were able to add so much more to offer and we are so excited to see our friends again this year.
Brian, Roxi, and I look forward to many adventures to come and welcome you to stop by and say hello!
